Kye gave Teer a few minutes to gear up and then led him out toward the edge of town. The Zeeanan soldier was quiet, restricting herself to instructions of a few words, as she led the young Hunter to a solid-looking stable.

“Sergeant Tavis should have your horse,” she told him. “Collect her and we’ll find the patrol.”

Star was eager to see him, as usual—and after the last few tendays, the mare seemed delighted to be only loaded down with Teer’s weapons and supplies for a single day.

Well, three days. The patrol was supposed to be out and back again, but Teer had been a ranch hand for half a dozen turnings. No ride into the wilderness ever went entirely as planned.

Kye looked a bit askance at the sheer array of gear that Star carried as Teer led the mare out of the stables. He was already carrying the Kott-steel saber and his two quickshooters, which meant that his horse was now carrying both of his long guns.

“What is it you hunt, again?” she asked.

“People,” Teer said quietly. “Bad people, I hope. Callipsuses count.”

“I don’t think I’ve heard even Taran call them ‘people,’” Kye said.

“I didn’t say they were nice people or civilized people,” he told her. “They’re murderous people-eating monsters, Kye, but they’re intelligent, magically powerful and dangerous.

“They’re monsters. But they are people.”

“That’s a broad definition of people you’re using,” she pointed out.

“Well, it’s a definition that includes you, me, Taran…even the Spehari and the Kott,” Teer replied. “It serves a purpose.”

“And being people doesn’t stop them from being monsters,” she conceded.

“In my experience, sadly, being a person is a requirement for being a monster.”
